Day 1 CPT Timeline for OPT Students (2026)
Most applications take 4–8 weeks from school selection to CPT authorization.
Step 1
Recommended timeline: 1–2 months before your OPT expiration
Choosing the right Day 1 CPT university is the most important step. Every school has different:
- CPT policies
- Tuition structures
- Program formats
- On-site attendance requirements
- Intake dates
Many universities now require:
- More frequent on-site attendance
- Additional compliance documentation
- Earlier application submission deadlines
Starting early helps avoid gaps in employment authorization.
Step 2
Processing time: Usually 2–4 weeks
Most Day 1 CPT universities require:
- Passport
- Visa
- Current I-20
- Employment documents
- Resume
- Academic transcripts
- Statement of purpose
Some schools may also request:
- Updated job descriptions
- Employer verification letters
- Proof that employment relates to your major
Admission decisions typically arrive within 2–4 weeks after submission.
Step 3
Recommended timeline: Begin 2–3 weeks before your OPT end date
After admission:
- Accept your offer
- Submit transfer forms
- Coordinate your SEVIS release date with your current school
Important 2026 update:
- You cannot work during the SEVIS transfer pending period
- Many students plan an unpaid leave during the transition
Once your SEVIS transfer is completed and your CPT I-20 is issued, you may legally resume work on the CPT start date listed on your I-20.
Step 4
Processing time: 3–10 business days after SEVIS transfer
Your new I-20 will include:
- CPT authorization
- Employer information
- CPT start and end dates
You may only begin employment:
✅ After receiving the CPT-approved I-20
✅ On or after the authorized CPT start date
Working earlier may violate F-1 regulations.
