What is CPT?

What is Curricular Practical Training (CPT)?

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a type of off-campus work authorization for F-1 international students under U.S. federal regulations (8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)).

It allows students to gain practical experience, such as internships, cooperative education, or other work integrated learning as part of their academic program.

Unlike Optional Practical Training (OPT), CPT is authorized by your university’s Designated School Official (DSO), not USCIS.

Because of this, the work must be directly tied to your curriculum and be an integral part of your degree program, not just an add-on.

Must be part of your curriculum

Requires full-time enrollment

    Legal Basis

CPT is governed by 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10) and USCIS policy guidance. It requires that the practical experience be "an integral part of an established curriculum" and be authorized by the DSO before the student begins any work. Students must maintain valid F-1 status throughout.

CPT vs OPT

CPT vs OPT: Key Differences

Both CPT and OPT are forms of practical training for F-1 students, but they differ significantly in timing, authorization process, and impact on immigration options.

Aspect
CPT (Curricular Practical Training)
OPT (Optional Practical Training)
Timing
During degree program
After graduation (Post-OPT) or final year (Pre-OPT)
Authorization
Issued by DSO as part of curriculum
Issued by USCIS (requires application) (Pre-OPT)
Processing Time
Days (DSO approval)
3–5 months (USCIS processing)
Usage Limit
12+ months full-time CPT eliminates OPT eligibility
12 months standard; STEM extension available

   Important

Using 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, consult your DSO before committing to full-time CPT.

Day 1 CPT

What Makes It "Day 1" CPT?

"Day 1 CPT" refers to programs where CPT authorization can begin from the very first semester of enrollment — rather than requiring students to complete a full academic year before becoming eligible.

This is possible when a university's graduate program is specifically designed to integrate practical experience as a required curricular component from day one. The key distinction is that the practical experience is not an optional add-on — it is woven into the academic curriculum itself, making CPT authorization appropriate from the first semester.

Day 1 CPT
Programs

CPT integrated into curriculum from semester 1
Practical experience is a required course component
DSO can authorize CPT from first enrollment

Traditional CPT
Programs

Requires 1 full academic year before CPT
Practical experience added later in program
CPT authorization delayed

   Academic Compliance

Day1CPT partners exclusively with universities whose programs are designed to include practical experience as a genuine curricular requirement from the first semester. This ensures that CPT authorization is academically grounded and compliant with USCIS regulations.

Misconceptions

Common Misconceptions

There is a lot of misinformation about Day 1 CPT. Here we address the most common myths with factual, regulation-based responses.

Myth

"Day 1 CPT is a loophole to get a work permit."

Fact

CPT is a federally recognized component of F-1 regulations (8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)). When properly authorized by a DSO and integrated into the curriculum, it is fully compliant with USCIS regulations.

Myth

"Any school can offer Day 1 CPT."

Fact

Only SEVP-certified institutions with programs that genuinely integrate practical experience into the curriculum from the first semester can offer Day 1 CPT. Not all schools qualify.

Myth

"CPT and OPT are the same thing."

Fact

CPT (Curricular Practical Training) is authorized during your degree as part of the curriculum. OPT (Optional Practical Training) is a separate benefit used after or near the end of your degree.

Myth

"Using Day 1 CPT will hurt your future immigration options."

Fact

CPT itself does not negatively impact your immigration status. However, using 12+ months of full-time CPT eliminates OPT eligibility. Students should plan accordingly with an immigration advisor.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'Day 1 CPT' mean?

It refers to CPT authorization that begins from the first day (or first semester) of a graduate program. This is possible when the practical experience component is built into the curriculum from the start, rather than being added later.

Is Day 1 CPT legal?

Yes. CPT is authorized under 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10) as part of F-1 student regulations. When properly authorized by a DSO at a SEVP-certified institution and genuinely integrated into the academic curriculum, it is fully compliant with USCIS regulations. Students are responsible for maintaining valid F-1 status.

Will using CPT affect my OPT eligibility?

Using less than 12 months of full-time CPT does not affect OPT eligibility. However, if you use 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you become ineligible for OPT. Part-time CPT does not count toward this limit regardless of duration.

What programs are eligible for Day 1 CPT?

Graduate programs (Master's, DBA, etc.) that include a practical experience component as a required or elective part of the curriculum from the first semester. Common fields include Business (MBA, DBA), Computer Science, Data Science, AI, and more.

How is CPT different from an internship?

An internship is a general term for work experience. CPT is a specific immigration authorization that allows F-1 students to engage in practical training as part of their academic program. All CPT must be authorized by your DSO and directly related to your field of study.

Can I work full-time on CPT?

Yes, full-time CPT (20+ hours/week) is possible if your program requires it. However, be aware that 12+ months of full-time CPT eliminates OPT eligibility. Many students choose part-time CPT to preserve their OPT option.

What is a DSO and why do they matter?

A Designated School Official (DSO) is the authorized representative at your university who manages your SEVIS record and issues CPT authorization. CPT is only valid after your DSO updates your I-20 and SEVIS record — you cannot begin practical experience before this step.
