Scholarships for Day 1 CPT Students (2025 Edition)

Balancing study, work, and living expenses in the U.S. can be especially challenging for international students. For Day 1 CPT students, practical factors like cost and location often outweigh school rankings or academic prestige.

During my own application journey, I discovered that a few CPT universities actually offer scholarships to international students—something I hadn’t expected given their already low tuition. I’m currently studying in the MS IT program at Westcliff University with the Warrior Scholarship, and I'll introduce 4 Day 1 CPT universities that provide scholarships, along with their eligibility and requirements.

It’s important to note that when applying for scholarships, I strongly recommend submitting two letters of recommendation and writing a personal statement of at least 750 words. When applying specifically for the Community Warrior Scholarship, be sure to detail the hardships you’re facing in life—especially financial difficulties—in your essay.

(2) Sofia University Scholarships

Sofia University offers up to 8 scholarships, most of which are merit-based. If your GPA is above 3.2 and aligns with the scholarship purpose, it’s worth applying. I recommend a personal statement over 750 words, tailored to the scholarship, along with two letters of recommendation.

(3) CIAM Scholarships

CIAM offers only three scholarships for international students in its Master’s programs, but compared to Sofia University, CIAM provides clear GPA requirements for scholarship eligibility. Still, I strongly recommend putting effort into writing a strong personal statement and submitting at least two letters of recommendation. Scholarships are awarded based on merit.

  • 1. Academic Excellence Scholarship 💰

    • Amount: Up to $3,000.

    • Eligibility:

      • A GPA of 3.8 or above.

      • Submission of academic transcripts.

    • Eligibility:

      • Female students with work experience.

      • Submit a 300–500 word essay.

(4) Monroe University Scholarship

Monroe University offers only one scholarship for international students in its Master’s programs, and it also has relatively high GPA requirements. In my opinion, it’s the most difficult to apply for among the four schools.

1. Graduate International Student Scholarship (GINTS) 💰

  • Eligibility: New international F-1 graduate students with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.75.

Final Thoughts

1. When applying for scholarships, the first thing to check is the GPA requirement. If you meet it, then you can apply. If the scholarship doesn't specify a clear GPA requirement, I personally believe that as long as your GPA is above 3.2, you should be eligible to apply.

2. The personal statement should be at least 750 words, with content focused primarily on the scholarship’s purpose and the target group it aims to support. Your past experiences, academic goals, and post-graduation career plans should all align with the scholarship’s purpose. It’s also recommended to explain any current financial hardships you’re facing, along with the efforts you’ve made.

3. It’s best to ask former professors or supervisors to be your recommenders. If that’s not viable, classmates or colleagues can also be considered. However, it’s strongly recommended to have at least two letters of recommendation.
