F-1 students are eligible for two types of work authorization: (1) Optional Practical Training (OPT) and (2) Curricular Practical Training (CPT).
Most students use OPT to work in the U.S. after graduation, while using CPT for internships during studies. The authorization of CPT is granted by the school's Office of International Students, not by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Generally, schools require students to complete at least one academic year of study before they qualify for CPT.
How Does Day 1 CPT Work?
Since Day 1 CPT is a work authorization for students, it requires the maintenance of F-1 student status. To use Day 1 CPT, students must be enrolled in a school.
Upon securing employment, students can then apply for CPT through the Designated School Official (DSO) at their institution. If approved, they will receive an updated I-20 form indicating their CPT work authorization. This authorization allows students to legally work in the U.S.
Simply put, Day 1 CPT enables students to remain in the U.S. on an F-1 status and work under CPT.
